Aquarium Maintenance Checklist

Daily Tasks

  • [ ] Check Fish Health: Observe fish for any signs of stress, illness, or unusual behavior.
  • [ ] Feed Fish: Provide the appropriate amount of food and remove any uneaten food after a few minutes.

Weekly Tasks

  • [ ] Gravel Vacuum: Clean the substrate with a gravel vacuum to remove debris and waste.
  • [ ] Test Water Parameters: Check pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels.
  • [ ] Clean Glass: Use an algae scraper or magnet cleaner to remove algae from the tank walls.
  • [ ] Check Filter: Inspect and clean the filter media if necessary, but avoid cleaning all media at once to preserve beneficial bacteria.

Monthly Tasks

  • [ ] Deep Clean Decorations: Remove and clean decorations, rocks, plants and heater to prevent algae buildup.
  • [ ] Inspect Equipment: Check all equipment for wear and tear and replace if necessary.
  • [ ] Trim Plants: Prune live plants to maintain their health and appearance.
  • [ ] Check Air Pump: Ensure the air pump and air stones are working properly and clean if needed.

Quarterly Tasks

  • [ ] Replace Filter Media: Replace part of the filter media to maintain filtration efficiency.
  • [ ] Deep Clean Filter: Perform a thorough cleaning of the filter components.
  • [ ] Replenish Substrate: Add fresh substrate if needed to maintain the tank’s appearance and health.

Annual Tasks

  • [ ] Replace Light Bulbs: Replace aquarium light bulbs to ensure proper lighting for plants and fish.
  • [ ] Review Stocking Levels: Assess the number and health of fish in the tank and make adjustments if necessary.
  • [ ] Inspect Tank Seals: Check the tank seals for any signs of wear or leaks.
